Mobile App Winners were announced on Friday June 13th! To view a complete list of the apps submitted, click here

Eligibility

  • This competition is open to Wayne State University students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Students may be undergraduate or graduate level, with at least half-time status.
  • Teams may include up to four (4) people. There must be at least one (1) current undergraduate or graduate degree-seeking student on each team.
  • Participants may not compete in more than one team.
  • Interested individuals in need of other teammates are encouraged to submit a registration form. Competition staff will help form teams to the best of their ability.

Rules

  • Apps can address any topic (e.g., food, shuttles, parking, studying, housing, social, safety).
  • Apps may include any number of features (e.g. push notifications, text messaging, etc.).
  • Apps may be designed for iOS and/or Android, or may be web-based as long as they are native to a mobile device.
  • No third-party frameworks are permitted in app development unless proper licenses are acquired.
  • Submissions must include all source code for official judges’ review.
  • Teams may submit only one (1) app for the competition, but they may have one version for each accepted operating system (e.g., iOS or Android).
  • The NEWLY EXTENDED  registration deadline is April 25th; registration forms are available here.
  • The app submission deadline is May 30th at 5PM; submit your app here.
  • Plagiarism or use of unauthorized material will automatically disqualify teams.
  • Contestants must comply with all licensing requirements and give credit or acknowledgement to any software or operating system as necessary.
  • Only new, unique apps that have not already been uploaded online will be considered for the competition.
  • Apps submitted to the competition should acknowledge Wayne State University’s Blackstone LaunchPad program somewhere in the app (e.g., the credits or info screen). Using the Blackstone LaunchPad name or logo outside the app (e.g., in marketing materials) during the competition is prohibited. Winners of any prizes in the app competition should modify the next version of their app to include a statement of how their app did in the competition. As an example, "Award winning app from the Mobile App Competition sponsored by WSU’s Blackstone LaunchPad. We are grateful for the University’s encouragement and support."
  • Wayne State University reserves the right to modify or change these rules at any time and for any reason.

Example App Ideas

  • Food Truck locations, dates, and times on campus
  • Local restaurants that deliver to campus and wait times
  • Store locations and hours along the Livernois Avenue of Fashion
  • Push notifications when student orgs are meeting
  • Estimated time of arrival for the campus shuttle
  • Note sharing or project coordination with classmates
  • Wayne State / Detroit history using GPS locating

Note: This list is just a sample of ideas. Apps may cover any topic and geographic area in Detroit, as long as they are useful to the campus community and improve the Wayne State experience.
